Columbus Day—is the day we celebrate Christopher Columbus’s historic discovery of the Americas in 1492—is a most unusual American holiday, as it commemorates an event that occurred well before the United States was a nation so it is a most unusual American holiday. The day has become distinctly American and yet,in the 500 years since columbus's sighting. Immigrants in the 19th and 20th centuries rallied around the immigrant Columbus. As Ronald Reagan remarked in a 1988 speech, Columbus Day has become a day “to celebrate not only an intrepid searcher but the dreams and opportunities that brought so many here after him.” Americans began to see Columbus as somewhat of a mythic founding figure in the late eighteen century; he was seen as an archetype of the American ideal by the 1830's: bold, adventurous, innovative.

Christopher Columbus (originally Cristoforo Colombo, 1451–1506) was born into a working-class family in Genoa, Italy. On merchant ships in the Mediterranean he worked as a mariner In his early twenties. Sometime in the early 1480s, after returning from a trip to a Portuguese trading fortress on the West African coast, Columbus began to seek support for his idea instead of having to sail around the southern coast of Africa and across the Indian Ocean he thought that asia could be reached faster and easier by sailing straight across the atlantic ocean.

This year it will be celebrated on 12th of October.

6.The first celebration of Columbus took place in 1792.

7.Many people do not like this day or this holiday, because they believe that the European settlement in the Americas led to the destruction of the history and culture of the people that were native to these lands.

8.In 1866, the Italian population of New York organized a celebration through events and activities of the discovery of America.

9.In 1892, President Benjamin Harrison announced the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ landing.

10.In 1937, every October 12 was announced as “Columbus Day” by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Why do We Celebrate Columbus Day - Columbus Day Controversy

Why do We Celebrate Columbus Day - Columbus Day Controversy

Columbus day s celebrated every year on second monday of ever october. It is celebrated because it is said that Christopher Columbus reached America this day. Its been celebrated as a Federal holiday since 1937. It is celebrated after a weekend so generally a four day long event or activities are organiised to celebrate this day. This year it will be celebrated on 12th October.

But here we have some controversy related to the man himself and off course the day. Do read them and share it with your friends:

1. Christopher Columbus never actually set his foot on North American soil and never actually reached North America. He actually landed on an island in the Bahamas, which he thought to be an Indian island. And which world thought to be America.

2.Only one out of three of Columbus' famous ships, the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria, is known by its real or actual name. the Santa Maria, which is the most famous, was named the Gallega, and the Nina was a nickname for the Santa Clara. Pinta was the original name of the ship others were either pet name or the other name.

3.Columbus and his men experienced a lot of sickness during their voyage and they are said to have brought the diseases syphilis back to Europe.

4.Christopher Columbus was not the explorer's real name. Experts believe that it was closer to Crisstofa Corumbo.

5.Columbus died might have been forgotten but he did not died poor. He died peacefully, relatively rich, and surrounded by friends and family.

6.Columbus Day is proudly celebrated by Italian-Americans everywhere, but amazingly he may not even be Italian. Surprised!!!

7.Columbus was very cruel. He had been killing and enslaving people. This is the reason people are rejecting this holiday, and have given rise to the term 'Columbus controversy'.

8.Christopher Columbus discovered the new world on October 12, 1492.
