In 1970 Columbus Day became an official United Sates federal holiday . The holiday has been commemorated in the U.S. on the second Monday in October since 1971, the same day is also be known and celebrated as Thanksgiving in neighboring Canada. On cloumbus day it is generally observed by banks, the bond market, the U.S. Postal Service and other federal agencies, most state government offices, and some school districts; however, most businesses and stock exchanges remain open.” Some Italian-Americans celebrate their heritage on this day with parades or other festivities.

It has the nation's sixth highest GDP per capita and is the most populous of the six New England States. The state features two separate metropolitan areas: the Springfield metropolitan area in the west and the Greater Boston area in the east. Approximately two-thirds of Massachusetts' population currently lives in Greater Boston.
