On October 12, 1492, Christopher Columbus landed on a small island in the Bahamas, convinced that he had reached the East Indies. The anniversary of his landing in the New World is known as Columbus day and it was first formally celebrated in 1792, by the Columbian Order in New York City and now,it is celebrated nationally on the second Monday in October. It is also observed as a national holiday. It was not a Federal holiday ntill the 18th century but since 1937 it is declared as a Federal holiday.
Columbus day celebrates the day, 516 years ago, when three small boats carrying Spanish sailors "discovered" the Western Hemisphere. This Encounter of Two Worlds led to the formation of a new continent which is named as America. People united through this. It determined the direction the Americas were to take from that point on, and when we calculate the significance of Columbus Day in our lives we need to take into consideration the whole package, from discovery through conquest to domination. And this plays a vey important role in every Americans lifes.
The traditional image of Columbus's discovery of the New World shows the Admiral stepping onto land with a flag in one hand and a sword in the other and he is surrounded by his fellow sailors, some of whom are carrying guns and swords. This might be the picture of the day when America wasfound and how he looked while stepping n to the land with his fellow sailors.
This year also it will be observed as a Federal holiday on Monday, October 12, 2015 (All except Alaska, Arkansas, California, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming)
